Rising Green Fest!!

Come and celebrate in concert with Jim Scott at the UU Fellowship in Aptos. Nationally respected, he is, among other things, creator of the “Earth and Spirit” song book and has sung and played with his friends and mentors Paul Winter and Pete Seeger.

Together there will be  music, singing, refreshments and discussion. An evening to remember.

For more three decades, Jim Scott has made it his business to create and perform music that celebrates the earth.  >From his work with the Paul Winter Consort where he co-wrote the celebrated Missa Gaia – Earth Mass and many other pieces, Jim has gone on to create an extensive body of work, recording 7 albums of original music, and creating “The Earth and Spirit Songbook,” an anthology of 110 songs of earth and peace by many contemporary songwriters plus some of his own.

Years of activism are reflected in Jim’s work.  His songs, poetry and short stories address issues of ecology, justice and peace with insight and gentle wit.  For all his varied professional background, it is Jim’s lyrical songs that remain his greatest offering.   He transforms any size audience into an intimate gathering with a guitar skill and disarming presence that inspires and educates with insight and gentle wit.

From songs and choral music to soundtracks for documentaries and the PBS series Body and Soul, Jim has made music with a depth of artistry and craft that separates his art from that of many other singer songwriters.  His musical “The Tree and Me” has been given full cast productions in Jamestown NY and Albion MI.  A whole line of Jim’s choral compositions and his book of guitar technique “All Scales in All Positions” are published by Hal Leonard Corp.

Jim helped to create the “Green Sanctuary” program and accompanying handbook for building an ecological/spiritual awareness in church congregations.  He performs many benefit concerts and often appears at events, supporting environmental and peace causes with his music.

We are just south of Cabrillo College, off Soquel (near and across from the Farm Restaurant). The main landmark at the corner of Haas and Soquel is a tall white wall with big houses behind it. Turn on Hass and wind up into the hills (away from the bay) for about a half mile. You will then come to a flat area with homes. Keep going straight onto a road marked “Private Driveway.” Take that short private road. We are the very last house on the right. (Plenty of parking in front of our house, and we may open the neighbors flat area if needed. (Please do not park on the stones in front of the neighbor kitty-corner from us.)

If coming from the south on Highway 1 (Watsonville) take State Park and make a right off the off-ramp, go up a couple of blocks to the main drag which is Soquel and make a left. Go for about a mile to Haas and turn right (up into the hills). If you pass the college, you overshot it.

If coming on Highway 1 from the north (Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley), take Park Avenue and turn left at the bottom of the off-ramp. Stay in the left lane until you pass a forced right turn—then get in the right lane because you will want to make a right turn onto Soquel. We are just past the college, as soon as you pass The Farm (restaurant) on the other side of the street. Make a left onto Haas )up into the hills). If you pass the Fire Station, you overshot it.

North on Hwy 1
Go right on Rio Del Mar exit, left at Soquel Dr, right at Trout Gulch Rd.
(Do not turn onto small side street: Valencia Street)
Continue on on Trout Gulch past the Post Office to the fork (0.3 mi.)
Stay Right at the fork of Trout Gulch and Valencia Road, go 0.7 miles to driveway marked with a mirror, and three numbers on an oak tree: 700, 740, 750
Park along driveway and at house at the end (740 Valencia Rd)

South on Hwy 1
Go left on State Park exit, right at Soquel Dr, left at Trout Gulch Rd.
(Do not turn onto small side street: Valencia Street)
Continue on on Trout Gulch past the Post Office to the fork (0.3 mi.)
Stay Right at the fork of Trout Gulch and Valencia Road, go 0.7 miles to driveway marked with a mirror, and three numbers on an oak tree: 700, 740, 750
Park along driveway and at house at the end (740 Valencia Rd.)

The entire Fellowship Facility will be closed August 2nd through 4th for parking lot resurfacing and painting. The Office will operate minimally from a remote location to answer emails and phone calls. If you or a group you are in is regularly scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday please note that you will not be able to gather on-site.

Once on Los Robles Road (a single lane road), you’ll continue driving through the two red brick columns and at the next
bend in the road, you’ll drive up the driveway on the right (#344 & #348) that is shared with our neighbors.

Get off the freeway at State Park Drive and go toward the Cement Ship. After going over the RR tracks turn right on Seacliff at the stop sign. Seacliff meanders a while. Turn right on Oakdale ( that’s the only way you can turn!) At the end of Oakdale you are at Poplar St. Turn left and I am at the corner of Poplar St. and Poplar Ct. ( blue house with Washington Blue Cedar on the corner) See you at 5:30!

We live in a “Senior Residential Park” called Villa Santa Cruz at

#50 is the 4th house down Monterey Drive, across from the clubhouse.

Approaching from Hwy. 1, go toward the ocean on 17th Ave. Turn left onto Felt St. (which is past Simpkins Swim Center and across from Shoreline Middle School). Drive to 24th Ave. (yellow No Outlet sign ahead on right) and turn left into Villa Santa Cruz.

Approaching from Portola (near the Live Oak Library): Go up 24th Ave. directly into Villa Santa Cruz.

Once in the park, after the stop sign, go past the clubhouse. Turn right and park on the side of the clubhouse, or if that is full, at the bottom of the hill. Our house is the gold one across from the clubhouse.
